Language Change and Innovation
Motivation – Manifestations – Stages

The Graduate School Language and Literature Munich- Class of Language (previously called LIPP) is organising its 21st LIPP-symposium, which will offer a platform for a synchronically and diachronically oriented treatment of the motivation, the phenomena and the stages of linguistic innovation. The symposium will be held from July 2nd until 4th 2014 at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich.

The title “Linguistic Innovation” is understood in the sense of processes occurring during different stages of language change, such as grammaticalisation, lexicalisation, morphological innovation (paradigmatic levelling, analogy, etc.) and reanalysis.

The symposium will offer treatment and discussion of mechanisms and types of language change with respect to their motivation, which should include both language-internal (language economy, rhetorical efficiency, pragmatic aspects) and language-external factors (language contact, dialect mixture, migration as well as other sociological contexts favouring language change).
